Newtownabbey

Bout Yeh’s social media this week

This week’s posts are definitely of things warm. Warm tones of summer of cherry blossoms in Newtownabbey, an aerial photograph of Eisenhower Pier, Bangor, dramatic reds of Harland and Wolff shipyard cranes silhouetted against a setting sun and a powerful black and white photograph of a lone walker at The Waterworks park, Belfast against a dramatic sky.

FYI. Established in the early 1840s by the Water Commissioner, the Belfast Waterworks supplied water to the city’s factories and residents for 20 years before demand began to outstrip supply.

Around 1889, Tom Boyce, a boating contractor who operated the Ormeau ferry across the River Lagan, was commissioned by the Water Board to provide 12 rowing boats for the site. Public bathing soon followed, as did diving, swimming galas and speedboat racing in 1929, followed by model yacht sailing in 1933.
Bought by Belfast Corporation in 1956, it was decided to partially fill in both of the site’s reservoirs for safety reasons. The work took ten years.
Since then, the upper pond has been stocked with trout for the local angling club and two manmade islands have been added to encourage waterfowl to breed.
